Using qualitative or/and quantitative research methodology, the researcher describes and discusses the experiences of the business diplomats and entrepreneurial participants in the economic mission organized by the Dutch government from the Netherlands to Turkey in November 2012, in the context of the 400th celebration of the countries’ long-standing bilateral relations. The economic mission included employers' leader of VNO-NCW, and 10 chief executives from Dutch multinationals and around 80 representatives of small and medium-sized enterprises. The Netherlands is now the third largest investor in Turkey, and bilateral trade has tripled in the last decades. As a commercial diplomacy service, trade/economic missions lend public support to domestic firms on the matter of entering foreign markets. By exploring the learning experiences and the determinants of trade mission effectiveness, a measuring instrument will be designed and used to map out the learning experiences of the entrepreneurial participants in the trade mission to Turkey. Business opportunities in the targeted market, and entrepreneurial orientation dimensions will also be identified on the firm and individual level, for the effective use of economic missions organizing by public agencies. In addition, this research aims to analyse the processes of the economic mission, and the learning aspects that influence it as experienced by commercial diplomats from the Dutch Foreign Minister in the Hague, the Dutch Embassy in Ankara, the Consulate General in Istanbul and the Netherlands Business Support Office (NSBO) in Izmir. Based on the analyses and expert interviews, the researcher will suggest innovations in the economic mission practices for both the entrepreneurial participants and the organizers of such economic missions.
