In order to further reduce the CO2 emissions coming from heavy duty vehicles DAF is looking into renewable energy sources. Next to battery electric vehicles which are more suitable for regional transport, hydrogen vehicles might be a worthy alternative for the current diesel long-haul vehicle. Hydrogen can be converted into energy to propel the vehicle in several ways; by means of combustion or by combining the hydrogen with oxygen which forms electricity and water, this is typically done in a hydrogen fuel cell.
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the different topologies feasible for a long haul heavy duty hydrogen powered vehicle.
Proposed project set-up:
- Literature study on the various hydrogen powered topologies feasible for a long haul heavy duty vehicle
- Familiarize with the full vehicle simulation model in Simulink (e-RITE model)
- Implement the most feasible hydrogen topologies in e-RITE
- Analyse the chosen topologies on fuel consumption, driveability, TCO.
For this assignment we are searching for a Master Mechanical Engineering / Automotive student.
You have / are:
- Good understanding of Simulink & MATLAB
- Independent working attitude, daily support available
The Technical Analysis department consists of a team with approx.15 specialists, responsible for the numerical verification and validations of new vehicle concepts and vehicle designs within the Product Development division. By means of simulations, new developments on vehicle and system level are evaluated and optimized for different vehicle performance aspects: fuel economy and CO2 emission, aerodynamics, thermodynamics, NVH, vehicle handling, crash safety, durability. These simulations support the design process from the first concept ideas to the final validation and sign-off of the truck design.
