Background information
The technological landscape is changing in the automotive industry, due to emerging technological and social developments, such as autonomous driving, urbanization, electrification, platooning, connectivity, etc. We are moving away from the legacy of our traditional products and systems to a more software- and data-driven approach. To facilitate this digital transformation the role of the IT department within DAF is changing. Currently, the IT department at DAF is responsible for the installation and maintenance of systems, but we are more and more becoming a service provider and consultant for other business units, exploring new technologies and supporting new innovations. We are therefore one of the internal frontrunners of DAF’s digital transformation. To support these changes, we are currently exploring new tools and technologies, such as SCRUM, Tosca, and Low-Code Platforms that will help us become more agile, more productive, more cost efficient, among many others.
However, while all these technological developments are highly challenging in themselves, we often tend to forget the human aspects. In the end, it’s still the people at DAF that interact with technologies and who play a crucial role in making them a success (or failure). Therefore, in this graduation project, we would like to explore the organizational challenges of implementing new IT technologies and how the human factor can be actively involved in changing an organization during a digital transformation.
Assignment description
Your assignment will be to, first of all, explore the major trends in the IT landscape and evaluate what kind of impact they (can) have on our IT organization and whether we have the right roles and responsibilities in place. Then we would like you to investigate how our current IT employees react towards these new trends and technologies and how involved they feel in the digital transformation. And lastly we would like a set of recommendations and possibly organization designs, capabilities, and/or tools, inspired through literature and case studies, that will help us involve the whole IT organization to be ready for the future. These are general suggestions for your assignment, but we are always open to discussing slightly different directions around the human aspects of a digital transformation.
For this assignment we are searching for a driven and enthusiastic Master student Industrial Engineering, Information Management, Information Sciences, IT Management, Work or Organizational Psychology, Organization Design, or Organizational Studies, with an affinity for the human approach within (information) technology developments.
We are looking for someone, who is able to easily translate high-level representations into low-level, specific details without losing the bigger picture out of sight. You are open towards people from different backgrounds, listen conscientiously, and are an excellent communicator.
